Goodir FC Clinches 1st Division Title While Jigjiga Yar Team Wins Basketball’s Second Division Title
Hargeisa (Somaliland Monitor) – USAID and Mercy Corps funded football and basketball tournaments intended to promote social integration through sports have ended with Police force’s football team, Goodir FC winning the first division title, where Jigjiga yar basketball team clinched the basketball’s second division title.
The football tournament’s final game held in Hargeisa stadium on March 16, saw the defeat of Aviation Ministry Stars team by Goodir FC in a score of 5-4.
Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the global humanitarian agency Mercy Corps, the Youth Integration Tournament aims to bring together youths from different social backgrounds for joint sporting activities that will help facilitate an environment in which they all interact.
Meanwhile, Jigjiga yar basketball team won the second division title after defeating their arch rivals, Callo basketball team. The final game of the basketball tournament held in Timacade stadium in Hargeisa on Saturday saw the defeat of Callo basketball team team by Jigjiga yar basketball team in a score of 27-22 points.
Mercy Corps says sport is a human right and a vital tool for youth growth, learning and social development. The organization tackles many different issues in areas affected by natural disasters and conflict using a variety of sport-based activities.
