USD 200,000 donations to drought affected people was boycotted by Somaliland, for the move described as political one, and not humanitarian.
Hargeisa (Somaliland Monitor) —Somaliland Republic won’t receive USD 200,000 donation to drought hit people in Somaliland from Somalia Federal Government, as it described this donation as a politically motivated one in which they meant to influence the people of the Republic of Somaliland, according to Somaliland’s Minister for Information and National Guidance Mr. Osman Abdilahi Sahardid (Cadaani).
“This boycotting decision following Somaliland’s cabinet of ministers unanimously agreed and described the money donation from neighbouring Somalia as a politically motivated move to attract the people of the republic of Somaliland, and not humanitarian related one,” Said Osman Sahardid after he held a press conference in Somaliland’s capital city.
Mr. Sahardid also described this move that Somalia want to provide humanitarian aid to Somaliland as acts of humiliation.
Recently Somalia Federal Government announced that it will provide food and money donation to assist severely drought-hit people in the regions of Somalia, as it received these donations from its international community.
Somaliland is one of the countries where the distressing footage and images of the destruction inflicted by a relentless and ravaging drought has brought the collective plight of its people into sharp focus.
According to Somaliland Foreign Affairs and International Coordination Dr. Sa’ad Ali Shire, “The drought has destroyed 80% of the country’s cattle and we are a pastoral economy. The bureaucracy has been so slow that in large parts of the country little or no aid has arrived.”
Others estimate that about half of the country’s 18 million livestock have died.
